⬤ 02. Roberto Sambonet

Honoring his work

The Concept is honoring Roberto Sambonet. He was an Italian designer, architect and painter. He attended the Faculty of Architecture in Milan, later devoting himself to painting. From 1948 to 1953 he was in Brazil, in São Paulo, where he taught at the Masp (Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo) directed by Pietro Maria Bardi, designed exhibitions and designed fabrics. In 1953 he returned to Italy, opened a studio in Milan and decided to devote himself mainly to design and painting. In 1953 he collaborated with Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, whose friendship would be a strong stimulus for his work, and began designing steel objects for Sambonet. The best known of the objects he designed would be the Pesciera, which, in 1970, enabled him to win one of his four Compassi d’oro awards. In 1957 he participated in the 11th Milan Triennale. From 1957 to 1960 he was art director of Zodiac magazine.

The Compasso d´Oro 1970 was awarded to Roberto Sambonet for the whole production designed for Sambonet, both for the content in which the technical, compositional and serial ability is manifested, as well as for the rational use of space and, finally for the appropriate use of material.

The collection of stainless steel trays uses simplification of shapes which are essential geometric forms. It seemed particularly appropriate to the possibilities of the material to seek this sensitive geometry that is united with the technical perfection about which Sambonet has always been deeply concerned.

Entirely made of stainless steel, the Pesciera is designed to be a multipurpose object, going beyond its original function of foil-cooking fish. It can in fact be a serving tray, an emptying container or for small desk accessories.
