Literacy Intervention
SERLER is a design intervention that intervenes in and interrupts existing status quos towards desired states in the matter of Literacy. The missing ability to write and read in adults in São Paulo, Brazil is the subject matter. Our intervention created by visual design wants to provoke real world action and intervene in human behavior.
We are Marta Macari from São Paulo, Brazil and Cara Hausdorf from Bad Salzuflen, Germany. In our masters we got to know each other and talked about the people, culture and statistics of our countries. The one thing we talked about was literacy and how it is seen and taught in different countries all over the world. When Marta talked about the problem of many people not being able to write their own name or read everday things, sing important document etc., it was clear that when the opportunity of creating a design intervention in one of our classes in the visual design master came, we had to intervene right there.
With our project SERLER we want to help people, especially adults, who didn´t have the chance to learn how to read. It is an urban intervention in their everyday life acitivies that help to encourage and give back confidence when it comes to reading (LER). SER é LER e LER é SER – Being is reading and reading is being.
